Duale promises enhanced security protocols at KNH

Health CS Aden Duale has promised enhanced security protocol at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) following the demise of Edward Maingi Ndegwa.

Speaking outside the hospital, Duale termed the incident as unacceptable and extended the Ministry’s condolences to the family of the deceased.

“To the family of Edward, we’re sorry. The Ministry of Health extends its condolences to the Ndegwa family for such a sad ordeal,” he said

“What happened at Kenyatta is unacceptable. That shows a system failure. I must address a humanitarian crisis,” he continued

Among the raft of measures set to be introduced are the issuance of identification documents by all those bringing in patients.

“As part of enhanced security protocols, all individuals, including police officers, bringing patients to the hospital, particularly to emergency units, will be required to present and have their identification documents recorded.

Going forward, no patient will be admitted if dropped off by unidentified or anonymous persons. This policy is critical in safeguarding both patients and healthcare staff and in preventing cases of abandonment, impersonation, or criminal activity within our health facilities,” he said

All hospitals have been directed to work closely with security personnel to ensure safety of patients and cases are reported on time.

“All hospitals have been directed to collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies to enhance safety and maintain order within their premises.

In instances where negligence or misconduct is identified, swift and decisive disciplinary or legal action will be taken to uphold professional standards.” he said

“We are strengthening security and surveillance in our health facilities by implementing tighter access controls and expanding CCTV coverage to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors.

At the same time, we are rolling out a robust and comprehensive quality assurance protocol across all national referral hospitals, aimed at standardizing care, enhancing accountability and reinforcing public trust in our health system.” he continued
