Governor George Natembeya denies four graft charges

Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has denied four graft charges levelled against him in relation to conflict of interest and unlawful acquisition of public funds.

Appearing at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, Governor George Natembeya denied the allegations and was released on Ksh 500,000 cash bail and orders barring him form accessing his office for a period of 60 days from today.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) today arraigned Trans Nzoia County Governor, George Natembeya, at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, where he faced charges of conflict of interest and the unlawful acquisition of public property.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Hon. C.N Ondieki, the accused denied the charges and was released on a bond of Kes1 million with one surety, or alternatively, a cash bail of Kes500,000. He was further barred from accessing his office for a period of 60 days from today.” said EACC

Natembeya is accused of receiving Ksh 3.2 million from one Mercy Chelangat, a business lady accused of dioing business with the Governor,

“The charges arise from allegations that Governor Natembeya received kickbacks totaling KES 3,252,568 between January 1, 2023, and April 30, 2025. These payments were allegedly made by Mercy Chelangat, the Director and Proprietor of Lyma Agro Science Limited and Maira Stores, companies that have been doing business with the County Government of Trans Nzoia.

Investigations by the Commission revealed that the funds were first received by Mr. Masungo, who would then channel the money to the Governor via M-Pesa. It was further established that Mr. Masungo operated a bank account at SBM Bank under the name of Easterly Winds Limited, a company through which funds from the county government were received and later redirected to Governor Natembeya.

Upon concluding the investigation, the EACC submitted the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who reviewed and approved the charges.

In addition to the current case, EACC is also pursuing Governor Natembeya and four others in relation to a separate investigation involving alleged irregular procurement and fictitious payments totaling Kes 1.4 billion during the Financial Years 2022/2023 and 2024/2025.

The EACC reiterates its commitment to fighting corruption and protecting public resources from misuse by public officials. Investigations continue, and further action will be taken in accordance with the law.” said EACC
