MP Major Bashir clarifies ‘we sympathize and move on’ remark

MP Major Bashir has issued a statement clarifying his recent remark ‘we sympathize and move on’ that angered many Kenyans.

According to the legislator, the statement was taken out of context as he was in parliament at the day of the Gen Z led protest in June and that he does not advocate for loss of lives.

“Over the past few days, I have observed with concern the public reaction to a phrase attributed to me during a recent Parliamentary session—“we sympathize and move on.” While the phrase has gone viral, it has unfortunately been taken out of context and does not reflect the intent or spirit of my remarks.

Let me set the record straight. I was present in Parliament on that solemn day when we unanimously condemned the tragic events of 25th June 2024—when innocent Kenyan youth lost their lives during anti-Finance Bill.

We mourned as a House and stood in solidarity with the affected families. At no point did I intend to dismiss or downplay the profound loss that occurred.

As a father, as a leader, and as a citizen of this nation, I am deeply pained by the killing of our young people—many of whom only sought to voice their frustrations peacefully, with courage and hope. Let it be known: I do not, and will never, support the unjust killings.

My remarks were directed at the biased narrative of some Western media, who are quick to condemn acts in other countries but remain silent on the massacre of Palestinians and other global injustices. It is this silence, this hypocrisy, that I was highlighting.

Yet my words were pulled out of that context and misunderstood by many.” he said

The statement by the MP has since angered many Kenyans who have come to the conclusion that leaders in the country do not care about them but only on matters that sustains their political life.
