Murkomen reveals plan to construct 12 more airstrips

Roads and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed plans by the government to construct 12 more airstrips in the country.

The CS was speaking during an inspection tour of the Karenga Airstrip in Kericho County to assess progress made in its construction.

The airstrip is being constructed by Kenya Airports Authority in conjunction with the Kenya Defense Forces.

“I am excited to note that the test landing and take off was successful and our First Lady HE Mama Rachel Ruto became the first person to land and take off from the airstrip yesterday.

Already, we are in talks with Ekaterra Tea Company to fast-track the process of land acquisition and allow the issuance of operation license, expansion of works and the construction of a modern terminal building. We are also working hard to complete construction of other 12 airstrips across the country.” said the CS

Murkomen promised that the first phase of the airstrip will be done before Mashujaa Day and the second phase will involve expanding the current runway from 1.2kms to 2kms.

“Construction of such aerodromes will facilitate fast movement of people and goods, promotion of tourism, access to emergency medical services, economic growth , among others.” he said
