Raila Odinga inches closer to clinching AU top job

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ambition of clinching the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship position is closer to being realized.

This is after the executive council adopted a critical decision that it is now the turn of East Africa to submit their joint candidate for the position.

Confirming the news was Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi who noted that the news was a breakthrough for the people of East Africa.

“This is a major breakthrough for the Eastern Africa region to present candidates for the position of Chairperson of the AUC,” he said

He continued by confirming the candidacy of Raila Odinga who he has been lobbying for immediately after the news broke out.

“It is now clear that Raila Odinga will be in the race for the AU Commission Chairperson. Effectively, there are no more technical or legal hurdles preventing Kenya from submitting its candidate,” he said

According to Mudavadi, it is time for Kenya to convince the 14-members of East Africa to stand firmly behind the ODM party leader and at the same time lobby other regions to back Raila.
