Gambling addiction has become increasingly common among university students in Kenya, particularly those grappling with financial difficulties. Many turn to betting in an attempt to boost their income or cover school expenses such as tuition.
One such individual is Edwin Nganyi, a businessman based in Nairobi, who struggled with gambling during his university years.
In a story he shared on X, Nganyi, a Bachelor of Commerce graduate from the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), explained how financial pressures led him to start betting. He hoped the winnings would help him pay his rent of KSh 3,500 and cover other day-to-day costs.
However, instead of easing his financial burden, gambling made things worse. He soon found himself deeper in debt and in an even more difficult financial position.
Determined to turn his life around, Nganyi spoke with a neighbor who worked in the cosmetics industry. After learning the basics and getting encouragement, he felt confident enough to give the business a try.
“My neighbor worked at a cosmetics shop. When I asked her about it, she said it was a profitable venture and didn’t require too much capital. She encouraged me to raise KSh 5,000. I began researching which cosmetics were affordable and in demand, as well as how to market them online,” he said.
Using the KSh 5,000 he managed to gather, Nganyi purchased his first batch of cosmetic products and started marketing them on social media. He received strong support from his female friends, who helped promote the business.
