Tanzania has shut down social media platform X in the country due to increased sharing of pornographic materials as confirmed by the Minister of information.
Speaking through a local media station, Mr. Jerry Silaa noted that the content on the social media platform was contrary to the country’s ‘laws, culture, customs and traditions.’

“Even on YouTube, you might notice that some content is inaccessible. That’s part of our broader effort to protect consumers and ensure that all online platforms operating in our country comply with our laws,” he said
The shut down of X has been in force in the last two weeks following the rise in political tensions between Tanzania and Kenya and after the Tanzania police social media account was hacked by unknown people.
Rights group in the country have however raised concern over the issue linking it with the upcoming elections where President Samia Suluhu intends to remain in power.
The human rights groups have also taken note of the same trend as it had occurred back in 2020 ahead of the general elections.
