Treasury has tabled a new proposal that will allow Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) have access to bank and M-Pesa details.
If the new law sails through, then KRA will no longer need a court order to access such information in the future.
“Kenya’s Treasury has proposed a new law in the Finance Bill 2025 that would let KRA access private customer data like bank and M-Pesa details by removing current legal protections.
If passed, KRA won’t need a court order to get this info from businesses.” said Money Academy.
This is not the first time the proposal has been tabled, with the first one causing an online uproar on Kenya’s data protection in the country.
Many Kenyans noted that the new proposal is a breach of privacy as the government will have access to one’s information when they want it, as they want it.
The government on the other hand, see the proposal as the way to go to ensure efficient tax collection.
